Autism and Toxic Chemical Exposure: What is the Relationship?

Autism and Toxic Chemical Exposure: What is the Relationship?

Autism and Toxic Chemical Exposure: What is the relationship? Almost 1% of 8-year-old children are diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder, a 10-fold increase over just a 15-year period. About 30% of this dramatic rise in autism cannot be explained by changes in the age of diagnosis and the inclusion of milder cases. Meanwhile, evidence has been accumulating that lead, mercury, polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), arsenic, toluene and other chemicals have a profound effect on the developing brain at levels that were once thought to be safe.

Since 1976 when our federal chemicals law – the Toxic Substances Control Act (TSCA) — was enacted, very little data has been collected on the effects of most chemicals used widely in every day products on the developing nervous system. For most of the 3,000 chemicals produced in highest volume (over one million pounds per year), only 12 have been adequately tested for neurotoxicity.

To ensure healthy brain development for future generations and the safest, healthiest environment for current generations, TSCA must be updated to require that all existing and new chemicals are tested and shown to be safe for pregnant women, children, workers, and other vulnerable populations.

Regardless of cause, there are families and children who need help NOW. As we work to get closer to the root causes of neuro-behavioral disorders, the Brain Balance Program offers interventions that are geared toward improving brain function through motor and sensory exercises, nutritional guidelines, and behavioral support.

The statistics are pretty crazy. I see this was written a while ago, but just recently I heard that these numbers have gotten even worse. Something like 1 in 80 kids (preference for males if I recall) are diagnosed currently. There is certainly something triggering the increase and I think household chemicals is a good place to start looking. The US government tends to ignore prevention and wait until their is a problem to respond. This is a great example with the chemical testing.

the autism rate in Tonawanda, NY is very high. The amount of chemicals released into the air and water is extremely high. How can their not be a relation? Why doesn't anyone care about our future generations?? The chemicals used for plastic, rubber, industrial solvents. The industrial revolution has ruined this country. Where our are clean energy sources? between the auto industry, printing, rubber and plastics manufacturing our children don't have a chance!!!

30% is not low value… I also realized if autism is increasing every year. I think there is a relationship between autism and toxic chemicals.
I think the government should provide the correct nutrition labeling on all foods and beverages products. Honestly, I was confused when I was in the supermarket because almost all foods contain chemicals. Maybe this is the cause of autism. Well, pregnant women should not consume food in supermarkets. I think all have to think of solution for this problem.
Is autism can be detected when the baby is still in the womb?
